As news of a second lockdown dropped last weekend, we did the best we could to cheer ourselves up by reliving some feel-good golden oldies.
One gem we stumbled across from 2018 still makes us grin as we did the first time we saw it.
Now, imagine this…
Standing on the side of the road, thumb extended to try and get the attention of drivers rushing by, it’s not always the most glamorous activity trying to hitch a lift.
But one hitchhiker got the surprise of his life when his roadside voyage turned into a showbiz affair.
Not only because he caught a lucky break to travel to his next destination, but because the person in question helping him was a rather familiar face – Chris Hemsworth.
The Australian star, who kickstarted his career in Home & Away before finding Hollywood fame, was cruising along when he decided to help a brother out.
Slowing his van down, the Star Trek actor stopped to see if he could help. He then struck up a conversation with the hiker, discovering he was a musician named Scott Hildebrand.
Scott had just landed in Brisbane from Mexico and was looking for a ride to Byron, a beachside town located in the far-northeastern corner of the state of New South Wales.
As luck would have it, Chris and his pals said they’d be happy to help. Initially, Scott was a little confused though as one of the passengers joked: “Chip in for the gas? It’s four grand.”
Little did Scott know, that the passenger just happened to be a major movie star.
It was only when he jumped into the van and the group pulled up at the helipad that the jigsaw puzzles began to piece together.
Scott explained: “All of a sudden, we pull up to the helipad. They’re like, ‘Ever flown in a helicopter, Scotty?’ I couldn’t believe it, and that’s when I was like, ‘Who are you guys?’”
Chatting to an Australian radio show, he added that the journey was “beautiful” and “magical” as they saw whales and dolphins during the ride.
At the time, Chris Hemsworth had just finished filming the Men in Black II remake when he had returned home to Australia and seen Scott on the side of the road.
He posted the clip of their travels on his Instagram page, inviting his millions of followers to join in on the action.
The MTV Movie Awards winner wrote: “Picked up a hitchhiker, wasn’t a serial killer which we were stoked about and just happened to be a kick ass musician @scotthilde.”
