Why sleep is the power tool to dial down anxiety… and how you can get more of it

Lying awake in bed trying to resolve arguments with loved ones or worrying about work can leave us not only sleep-deprived but also stressed.

If this anxiety is allowed to thrive, it can impact us long-term both mentally and physically leaving us exposed to a variety of health risks.

It can also leave us vulnerable to skin health problems, with lack of sleep affecting the growth and renewal of our cells and organ systems.

Together with a healthy diet and staying hydrated, the importance of sleep is now under the microscope to show people how crucial it is in staying healthy.

Sleep is crucial as it enables the body to repair and be fit for the next day, while also reducing inflammation, keeping the heart healthy, and aiding memory.

While sleep requirements vary from person to person, most adults need between seven and nine hours per night to function at their best – with young people needing more.

Clinical pharmacists, Dr Catherine Hood and Sultan Dajani, are now flying the flag for a new product named DragonflyCBD to help us tackle stress, anxiety and sleep issues.

Speaking in a joint statement, they said: “Even one bad night’s sleep can play havoc with health and skin. Facial communication is important in everyday life so these signs of sleep deprivation can have important impacts on work and social life.

“Research shows that CBD could have a protective effect within skin cells against the harmful effects of irradiation and environmental pollutants that lead to oxidative stress.

Hood and Dajani also revealed the results of several trials, one in which 70 healthy people found that CBD reduced the time to fall asleep and improved sleep efficiency.

In a second trial involving 72 adults, CBD oil improved anxiety and sleep scores within the first month, while administration of CBD showed to reduce resting blood pressure and the blood pressure increase to stress in humans, associated with increased heart rate.

All of the body’s organs respond to anxiety and as the largest organ in the body, the skin is not immune. It is highly innervated and the primary sensing organ for external stress.

The receptors in the skin transmit stress signals to the brain, the brain then responds to these signals, which in turn influence stress responses in the skin such as inflammation.

If we nurture sleep, in turn we protect anxiety levels from rising and skin being susceptible to passing these messages through the body.

Stress exerts its effects on the skin mainly through the hypothalamus and pituitary (located in the brain), together with the adrenal glands. Stress then leads to increased production of the hormone cortisol which can impact the skin’s quality through increasing inflammation and destabilising the immune system which can aggravate problems like acne and eczema.

DragonflyCBD can therefore help with irritated and inflamed conditions as research shows its anti-inflammatory properties can prevent issues from flaring up.

Hood and Dajani continued: “Whilst most research to date has focused on the impact of CBD in the endocannabinoid system in the central nervous system, research shows that endocannabinoid receptors are also located in the skin.

“In fact, CBD works with the endocannabinoid system of the skin almost in harmony. Research published this year has also identified a further biochemical target for CBD within the skin cells that could help explain CBD’s anti-inflammatory effects.”
