Quirky care home residents transform into A-list royalty to beat lockdown blues

If you think it’s just little kids that have been dipping into the dressing-up box during lockdown, think again.

Because the badass residents at the Sydmar Lodge Care Home in London have taken it upon themselves to bring a touch of celebrity to Edgware by impersonating their idols.

And the nursing home staff have captured the magic perfectly, with photos that look like near-replicas of infamous album covers.

Up there as one of our faves, we have Lily transforming into ‘Lilyonna’ with a sensual tilt of the head to mirror Madonna’s True Blue record from 1986.

Then we have Sheila Solomons duplicating The Clash’s 1979 album London Calling, albeit she is posing with her walking stick instead of Paul Simonon smashing his bass.

There are also nods to Taylor Swift’s 1989 album, which was titled after the year she was born (with the Sydmar Lodge version boasting 1922 across the front), and David Bowie’s Aladdin Sane 1973 record with resident Roma Cohen appearing to wear nothing but the notorious Ziggy Stardust zigzag face-paint.

Carer Robert Speker shared the images online, celebrating the masterpieces that had been recreated during four months in lockdown.

Thanks to the wonders of social media, the post soon went viral and Robert decided to raise cash for Alzheimer’s UK and Dementia Friends after the public’s support.

He also hopes to use the money for more care home projects, so who knows, we could see these residents on the Britain’s Got Talent stage one day.

Writing on Twitter, he said: “We have just launched a GoFundMe to raise money for activities for all the residents whilst they remain in lockdown.

“The idea of a calendar has been a very popular suggestion, so we are looking into this.”

One Twitter user praised Robert, saying: “These are so moving. Reminds me of my 97-year-old grandmother telling me that on the inside she was still 18. Beautiful.”

While another added: “My grandma is 93 and says that she catches herself in the mirror and wonders ‘who that old woman is’ as she still thinks of herself as being in her 20s.”

The images also sparked requests from people asking Robert to set-up photoshoots to imitate the artwork of Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga records. So, watch this space!
